Welcome FH JOANNEUM – Institute for Aviation

We are very happy to welcome a new member to the AME family – with FH JOANNEUM Institute for Aviation, we extend the AME network to Austria.

The Institute of Aviation at FH JOANNEUM is a leading Austrian centre for applied aviation research and higher education, based in Graz. It combines engineering expertise, systems thinking and safety-oriented design to advance both manned and unmanned aviation.

Its core competencies include aircraft design, systems engineering and airworthiness, with a strong focus on safety assessment and operational validation. In recent years, the institute has expanded its activities in Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), particularly in airspace integration and certification.

To support applied research and operational validation, the institute also has access to dedicated UAV test sites, including areas in high-mountain regions that enable realistic testing and use-case development under challenging environmental conditions.

Through close collaboration with industry and research partners across Europe, the Institute of Aviation links academic excellence with applied research, contributing to innovative and sustainable solutions for the future of aviation.

The institute has also participated in SESAR call proposals and is keen to engage in future European research initiatives and consortia.
