We welcome the explicit recognition of drones and Innovative Air Mobility (IAM) in the European Commission’s Call for Evidence for a renewed EU Aviation Strategy.
As outlined in the problem statement of the call, progress in deploying unmanned air transport services across the EU has been slow, and their integration into EU airspace remains incomplete, while other regions of the world are catching up rapidly. A renewed EU Aviation Strategy provides a possibility to create new momentum by setting out a clear vision, flanked by an ambitious roadmap and dedicated legislative, operational, and financial measures.
It is paramount that the new strategy recognises the drone and IAM ecosystem (manufacturers, operators, service providers, infrastructure providers, …) not as an add-on, but as integral components of the aviation ecosystem, with significant and undeniable contributions to EU key priorities.
